Abstract
The purpose of this paper was to investigate the test-retest reliability of the speech discrimination test using the monosyllablic word lists. The subjects were 45 normal hearing and 48 hearing impaired people. The hearing impaired were consisted of 21 with mixed hearing loss and 27 with sensorineural hearing loss. The test was presented using a cassette tape and open set procedure. The retest was done within two weeks with the same list and procedure. Specifically, discrimination scores were measured at 12 stimuli groups (10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 and 100 words). In this study, the data were analyzed using the correlation coefficient, and then the standard error of measurement (SEM) was obtained for each group. The 95% confidence intervals were also calculated by the SEM. The results of this study were as follows: First, the average rate of incorrect responses was 2.2%. Second, the test-retest reliability was high in all test conditions. The reliability values were higher than 0.75 (p<0.01) for the conditions of greater than 50 words. Finally, the SEM decreased in all groups as the word numbers increased. These results suggest that the speech discrimination test using monosyllablic word lists be reliable and give useful information for measuring the effects of auditory rehabilitation.
